East Lansing, October 2006: Fraunhofer Center for Coatings and
Laser Applications (CCL) has received funding from the MEDC 21st Century
Jobs Fund in order to extend its commercialization activities in the area
of its unique carbon-based materials expertise.
Carbon-based materials and coatings have strong commercial potential
and market opportunities. There are several significant benefits of carbon-based
coatings over conventional coatings such as its extraordinary electrical,
thermal, optical and mechanical properties. Just considering its mechanical
properties alone diamond has low friction (beneficial in such applications
as advanced engine design), increased hardness, high Young's modulus and
increased wear resistance and lifetime. As such these coatings have applications
across a variety of industries from wear components in the automotive
industry to high technology areas as biocompatible implants, fuel cells,
cell phones, and micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS), sensor technologies,
optical and electronic applications.
Fraunhofer CCL works closely with its partner Michigan State University
(MSU) to bridge the gap between university research and industry by providing
innovative applied research services to industry and government customers.
Using joint laboratories, personnel and equipment resources CCL conducts
research projects contributing to innovations in key technology sectors.
Many projects involve applied research programs with Michigan-based companies
to improve their key technologies. These efforts help local companies
to gain a competitive edge in today's challenging marketplace, which in
turn will aid in securing and creating employment. The overall result
is that Fraunhofer CCL's commercialization activities will help to enhance
Michigan's competitive edge technology sectors and establish a commercialization
support system that fosters the development of a flourishing business
community within competitive edge technology sectors such as Advanced
Materials/Automotive and Life Science.
