Principle and Advantages of Laser Beam Hardening

Through hardened

Laser hardened saw blades

Principle

Rapid short-term heating

  • local heating of thin surface layer
  • unconventional high austenitization temperature

Short hold time (0.01 s to 10 s)

  • Homogenization of carbon distribution
  • Propagation of austenitization front into material

High quenching velocity

  • Selfquenching due to rapid heat conduction to the interior

Advantages

  • Outstanding wear properties
  • Higher fatigue strength
  • Lower loss of ductility at higher surface hardness
  • Smaller dimensional deviation
  • Selective Hardening of single surfaces or edges
  • Surface temperature control possible
  • Self quenching process
  • Applicable for any material that can be hardened
